Entertainment

  • This is a great overview of basically every venue in AMS https://www.reddit.com/r/Amsterdam/wiki/nightlife/#wiki_what.27s_on_at_the_mayor_venues_this_week.3F
  • Don’t be scared off by SEXYLAND, the name is kind of a joke. It’s good/weird/varied performance and art and there’s two restaurants, a bar and a great view of the city.
  • Places I’ve been and liked:
    • Splendor
    • Mezrab
    • Bimhuis
    • The Other Side
    • SEXYLAND
    • Die Nieu Anita
    • OT301 - former squat, now a combination of event spaces, movie theater, community spaces
  • Go dancing. People in europe go to dance parties. Like all the time. They are good at it. Enjoy yourself. It’s a good energy.

Clubs

Ugh, how have I been to so few of these? Descriptions of what I know to follow

  • Raum
  • Radion
  • The Other Side
  • Garage Noord
  • Skatecafe
  • Skatepark
  • Lofi

Museums

Ugh, how have I been to so few of these?

  • Steidilijk - contemporary / temporary art
  • Rijksmuseum - The big one, dutch masters & colonial aquisitions
  • FOAM - contemporary photography

Food

I generally think The Infatuation is pretty decent but they've steered me wrong once or twice since I've been here so take it with a grain of salt - https://www.theinfatuation.com/amsterdam/guides/best-restaurants-hotels-amsterdam

In general I think hip-ish restaurants near Amsterdam Oud-West and Oud-Oost tends to be better than stuff inside the canal belt.

One-off recs

For Groups

  • Blauw - is not my favorite by far, but it IS the standard place for taking out of towners / being taken out by your guests for rijkstaffel (indonesian smorgasbord)
  • Tujuh Maret - not fancy indonesian but is sit down and I thought was way better than Blauw
  • Little Collins - this looks like your average "have you been here before? the menu goes from small bites to large plates, we recommend 3-5 per person" restaurant BUT is consistently super delicious
  • BAK - one or two steps fancier than Little Collins, it's a tasting menu fancy place maybe one michelin star? was good and I think decent for the price
  • Pllek is not fancy and probably not in the right part of town by virtue of being across the river, but the vibes are great and the food is usually pretty good

Near Harlemmerplein

Solely because I used to live near there

  • Le Sud Vegetarianisch for cold mediterranean spreads.
  • Rue d’Bastille for moroccan food
  • Cafe Mads for south african donuts + curry, delicious (for lunch)
  • Ramon’s for coffee and sandwiches. Super cute.

Good Beans / Fucking Strong Coffee f

or excellent expat vibes (also croissants from the best bakery I’ve been to)
